If you’ve lost all of your natural teeth, whether from gum disease, tooth decay or injury, dentures are your way to go.  Besides helping your appearance, dentures make it easier to eat and speak better than you could without them.

Types of dentures:

  • Conventional: This type of denture is removable and can be worn after your gums have healed after removal of any remaining teeth. This usually takes a few months for your gums to be ready for dentures.
  • Immediate: You can start wearing this type of denture on the same day your remaining teeth are removed. You may need to come back for adjustments to the denture after your jaw has healed from the tooth removal.
  • Overdenture: Sometimes some of your teeth can be saved to preserve your jawbone and provide stability and support for the denture. An overdenture fits over a small number of remaining natural teeth after they have been prepared by Dr. Schlueter .

Like your teeth, your dentures should be brushed daily to remove food particles and plaque. Brushing also can help keep the teeth from staining.

  • Rinse your dentures before brushing to remove any loose food or debris.
  • Use a soft bristle toothbrush to gently clean the surfaces of the dentures.
  • Just because you have dentures, don’t forget about the test of your mouth! You still need to brush or clean your gums, cheeks, tongue and roof of your mouth to remove plaque.
  • Store our dentures in a safe place covered in water to keep them from warping.
  • You may need to use an adhesive to keep your dentures in place in your mouth. Our denture experts can recommend appropriate adhesives.
