Deep Teeth Cleanings

Hopefully you have been seeing us for your regularly scheduled cleanings. However despite your best efforts at brushing and flossing, you may need additional cleaning under your gum tissues. A deep cleaning is a periodontal procedure that is indicated for patients that have periodontal disease.

Deep cleanings help remove harmful bacteria mechanically that cause periodontal disease. Local anesthetic is used during this procedure to keep the patient comfortable.

Periodontal disease causes harmful bacteria that can even destroy your jaw bone and other nearby structures and in extreme cases lead to tooth loss.

Who Needs Deep Cleaning?

When both tartar and plaque are left untreated for a long time, bacteria begins to breed and could affect the gum. This leads to gingivitis, inflicting more damage to the teeth. If left untreated, gingivitis can lead to tooth loss.

  • Signs and Symptoms of gum diseases
  • Tender, red, bleeding or swollen gums
  • Gums receding from the tooth
  • Bad breath
  • Loose teeth
  • Pus surrounding gums and teeth

What happens during a deep cleaning?

If you’ve ever had your teeth cleaned, the steps involved in a deep cleaning are quite similar.

  1. Examination: Using a small mirror, Dr. Schlueter will examine your entire mouth, checking for inflamed gums.
  2. Tartar Elimination: Schlueter uses the small mirror and a scaler for eliminating tartar and plaque between the teeth and around the gum line.
  3. Toothpaste Cleaning: Schlueter will then brush your teeth using a high-powered electric brush.
  4. Flossing: Flossing helps remove any remaining plaque.
  5. Fluoride Treatment: Finally, Dr. Schlueter will use a fluoride to help protection to help teeth.
